Existential bread isn't a cookbook. Let's get that out of the way. There are no recipes and no photos, only a few pen and ink drawings. No, this book is what happens when you cross a poet with a obsessed breadhead, toss in a dash of nomadic wandering and present it in prose.
Author Jim Franks clearly loves bread. Is obsessed with bread. And he's spent the last several years traveling the country baking at some of the nation's most interesting bakeries. But this book isn't a travelogue either. It's a collection of bread wisdom, useful facts, and thoughts laid out in philosophic prose.
Seriously the entire book is one long poem.
This is certainly a book with a clear perspective. Often Franks has strong opinions and sometimes lays them out in edgy unfiltered thoughts. Other times he takes a more measured approach, taking pains to say how personal bread is and therefore that there is no right way to do anything.
Whether you agree with Franks' take, chances are good you'll be entertained and come away more informed than when you started. His writing is often funny and always engaging. This isn't your average book. But maybe you've got enough of those?
